Duties: GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

The incumbent in this class assists in the Public Works Department, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of the city's infrastructure. This position involves skilled work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of various concrete structures, sidewalks, curbs, and other municipal facilities.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

The incumbent in this role would be responsible for a range of tasks that are essential for the upkeep and enhancement of the city's infrastructure. The incumbent would play a key role in working with management in the maintenance and repair and replacement of damaged sidewalks, curbs, and various other municipal concrete structures. Proficient use of hand and power tools is imperative to prepare surfaces, set forms, and achieve the desired finish for the concrete.

The incumbent will be responsible for the handling and management of concrete materials, operating concrete mixing equipment, and ensuring appropriate materials are accurately prepared.
The incumbent will be expected to follow current safety practices as outlined by the Department and WorkSafe.

The incumbent will ensure that any malfunctions or issues with equipment are promptly reported to supervisors to facilitate timely repairs, and the worker is expected to maintain a clean and organized work environment.

The incumbent works closely with other municipal workers, including construction crews, to ensure the efficient coordination of projects. Effective communication with supervisors, engineers, and team members is fundamental to project success.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The incumbent in this class will work any five (5) consecutive days in the calendar week in accordance with published shift schedules and if authorized, work overtime. The incumbent must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather. The incumbent must wear safety equipment as appropriate and observe recognized safety practices in the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: -Must have a minimum of grade 12 education, supplemented by courses - OR - have related training and experience;

-Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence with qualifications in classes appropriate for the operation of equipment;
Skills: - Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in this trade;

-Should have a strong understanding of concrete materials, construction techniques, and safety protocols;

-Works independently and organizes work projects;

-Understands and effectively carries out oral and written instructions;

-Knowledge of methods, techniques, hand/power tools, and equipment used in this trade;

-Knowledge of concrete and cement mixes;

-Knowledge of Chilliwack’s polices, procedures and standards;

-Ability to assist in estimating necessary equipment and materials needed;

-Ability to perform assigned duties under minimal supervision;

-Must be able to effectively communicate with members of the public;

-Ability to physically perform the work;

-Ability to perform skilled formsetting and concrete finishing duties;

-Knowledge of applicable safety regulations.
Salary: $35.50 per hour (2024 rate)
