Duties: GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the sewage treatment function of the Utility Operations Department through reliable performance of monitoring and servicing sewage equipment, treatment plant and related equipment, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices.


NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

The incumbent will be required to perform a variety of tasks varying in degree of complexity and required knowledge as related to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation. The work differs from that of a Plant Operator I as it entails supervisory responsibilities as scheduled. On weekends and other absences of the Mechanical Operator, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator shall be responsible for equipment repair. The incumbent Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be responsible for the performance of a variety of duties, including but not restricted to supervising the work of assigned subordinates, operating the sludge disposal equipment (anaerobic digestors and belt filter press) in an efficient manner, the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment as designated by the supervisor; tending aeration equipment; clearing coarse materials and obstructions from screens to maintain correct flow of influent and effluent; removing and cleaning screens and scrubbing processing tanks and walkways; cleaning precipitate, sludge and wash from sumps and tanks; assisting electrical and mechanical operators as required; maintaining cleanliness of plant and grounds; carrying out preventive maintenance procedures/programs; performing and recording laboratory analysis of treatment stages including pH, chlorine residual, chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, suspended, settleable, volatile and other total solids, and dissolved oxygen. The incumbent will be required toassist in carrying out laboratory analysis in support of various studies being conducted by or for the City including testing of lechates. The Incumbent will also be required to operate the Pathological Incinerator. The incumbent will be required to perform standby duty with emergency pagers as directed and report all suspected defects in the operation. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Supervisor III - Wastewater Treatment Plant.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The incumbent will work any five consecutive days within the hours as prescribed in publicised shift schedules and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The incumbent must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather and under conditions of gases, fumes and odours. The incumbent must wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: - Must have completed grade 12 education and be certified as a Group II Operator under the Environmental Operators Certification Program

- Desirable to have a certificate in the Water Treatment Operations from a post secondary institute

- Minimum of 2 years experience as a Level I WWTP Opertor

- Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
Skills: -Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in treatment plant operations;

-Able to understand the principles of the functions and operation and to apply the techniques of tending and maintaining sewage processing and sludge disposal equipment;

-Able to work in wet or humid conditions while subject to odours, fumes and gases;

-Sound knowledge of routine duties and able to perform with a minimum of supervision;

-Knowledgeable in the monitoring of electrical and mechanical control panels and gauges;

-Good knowledge in electrical and mechanical maintenance repair and preventive maintenance programs;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors and other members of staff;

-Able to relate to the public and be neat and presentable in appearance.
Salary: $37.68 per hour (2024 rate)
