Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation within the maintenance section of the Public Works Department through reliable performance of all mechanical and supervisory functions; ensuring all municipal vehicles and equipment are maintained in an acceptable and operational condition; providing effective supervision and leadership to subordinate staff; observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices.
The incumbent in this class is a working Foreman with the responsibility for the overall maintenance requirements of municipal vehicles and equipment either through direct performance or through the supervision of the work of others; overhauling, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of automotive, mobile and stationary equipment; rebuilding and replacing transmissions; installing and repairing motors, front and rear assemblies and steering and braking systems. The incumbent will be responsible for the effective organization and performance of the work requirements of staff; preparing mechanical/vehicle specifications; communicating with equipment suppliers; operate the oil sampling program on the computer; preparing and maintaining preventative maintenance programs and records; establishing routine maintenance schedules, assisting in the hiring of subordinate staff, assigning subordinate staff to work requirements and supervising same; supervising and approving work of drivers/operators, ensuring such work is completed in accordance with established procedures and pertinent legislation; training and discipling staff in accordance with established policies/practices. The incumbent will coordinate the repair, design, construction and modification of equipment in agency shops; follow-up on problems encountered either verbally or in writing and authorizing invoices for parts and repairs. At times, the incumbent will be required to inspect and approve newly purchased equipment, travel may be required in these instances. The City's automated fuel dispensing system will be the responsibility of the incumbent. The incumbent is also responsible for inspecting City vehicles in compliance with commercial vehicle inspection regulations. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Assistant Operations Manager.
Education: -Must be in possession of a Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate with several years progressive experience in a supervisory position;

Skills: -Sound knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the automotive/heavy duty mechanic trade;

-Superior knowledge of the practices, procedures, methods and principles used in vehicle/equipment maintenance;

-Sound knowledge and application of the National Safety Code;

-Hold or able to obtain Fire Apparatus Certifications;

-Superior knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the automotive/heavy duty mechanic trade;

-Must hold a valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate;

-Hold or able to obtain B.C. Pressure Fuel Certification;

-Sound knowledge of alternative fuels as related to a mixed fleet environment;

-Have working knowledge of computer applications as related to the duties of Journeyman Mechanic;

-Thorough understanding of the duties of Automotive Service Technician, Commercial Transport Mechanic, Heavy Duty off-road equipment, and Emergency Response Fire Fighting equipment;

-Able to perform welding and fabricating work;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, maintain schedules, preventative maintenance programs and complete appropriate records, reports, etc.;

-Able to operate computer based, maintenance management systems;

-Able to operate or understand the principles of operation of all municipal equipment to perform road tests as necessary and be in possession of a valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air endorsement;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual or potential safety hazards;

-Able to demonstrate the proper procedures in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work place;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all departments and members of staff;

-Able to effectively supervise the work and performance of other staff members as assigned.


Salary: $42.21/hr ( 2024)
