Duties: The incumbent in this class will assist management to achieve an efficient operation within the Operations Department through reliable performance of a technical nature in all facets of surveying related to civil engineering works and other duties as assigned. The incumbent will and observe and comply with municipal policies and safety practices.

The incumbent in this class will be responsible for technical field and office work of a civil engineering nature at the technologist level; coordinating, directing and participating in field survey assignments to meet the requirements of the City’s operating and engineering programs. Gathering field data required in the planning, design and construction of all types of municipal construction projects; liaises with designers and project managers to plan survey works and coordinate responsibilities; reviews incoming data to ensure accuracy and completeness; and performs survey work as required. Receives new work requests from other departments; prepares estimates and budgets for survey projects; prepares a scope of work through confirmation of project deliverables; schedules, prioritizes survey work; maintains a tracking list on status of survey projects. Provides guidance/assistance to supervisors of other departments in resolving field challenges with layout and construction tolerances; liaises with design engineers to resolve discrepancies in design drawings; establishes and maintains contacts with a variety of internal and external contacts on matters related to survey work. Develops applicable survey standards and process; provides direction and training in survey techniques and layout to construction crews; provides input on Municipal CAD standards. Obtains, reviews and utilizes legal plans from the Land Titles Office for use in developing legal information for drawings. Utilizes computer programs to draft survey data; compiles control data for survey projects. Prepares and maintains records, files, drawings, and data for survey work; maintains inventory of survey equipment and materials; Performs other duties and tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Superintendent Public Works.
Education: Must have completed a Civil or Surveying Technology Program from a recognized Institute of Technology, and be eligible for certification with ASTTBC at the Technologist level.


Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Drivers Licence.
Skills: - Must have a minimum of five years surveying experience.

- Proficient in the operations of Computer Assistance Design & Drafting (CADD);

- Able to read and interpret survey plans, profiles and cross sections;

- Able to prepare 3D survey drawings using field survey data, including 3D cross sections.


- Sound knowledge of mathematics and other calculations related to surveying, civil engineering and construction;

- Sound knowledge of surveying and engineering practices, procedures and principles;

- Able to assess surveying requirements, making notes and adjustments in the field;

- Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials, other staff members contractors and consultants;

- Able to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates;

- Able to use surveying, drafting and computing instruments effectively, including, but not limited to GPS equipment.

The incumbent will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday within the hours specified and, on occasion, work overtime as authorized. The incumbent may be required to travel in the performance of duties. The incumbent will be required to attend technical courses and conferences as required. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Salary: $45.40 per hour (2021 rate)
