Department: Recreation and Culture
Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Recreation and Culture Department through reliable performance in staff supervision, building maintenance, and in accordance with municipal policies and safety practices.

The incumbent in this class is the first line working supervisor responsible for the supervision of subordinates, maintenance projects and equipment; planning, directing, and coordinating the work of subordinates; training in accordance with established policies/practices; assigning work of subordinates, ensuring acceptable standard of completion; assessing the performance of subordinates and equipment, preparing written reports as required; and, as assigned, be on standby call to respond to building after hour emergencies. The incumbent shall be responsible for equipment and materials assigned to him; organizing labour materials and equipment to ensure they are available at the time and location required; ensuring that all acceptable and reasonable safety measures are taken to protect personnel, equipment, material, and the public from injury or damage. The incumbent in this class is responsible for assisting in the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets for the buildings under their supervision. The incumbent will perform all duties expected of an Tradesman/ Building Maintenance Worker as required. The incumbent will be responsible for (a) ensuring facilities are kept to an acceptable standard; (b) repairs and maintenance to all equipment and facilities; and (c) ensuring equipment is in proper working order and used by subordinates in an acceptable and safe manner. The incumbent will perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Superintendent of Civic Facilities.

The incumbent in this class will be required to work any consecutive five days within a calendar week and conform to the hours as prescribed in published shift schedules and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The incumbent must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather. The incumbent will be required to work at any municipally owned facility and must wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of their duties. Travel will be required in the performance of duties. Employees in this class, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: -Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education; successfully completed a 2 year program in Building Maintenance at a recognized vocational institute or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
Skills: -Must have a minimum of five years experience in building and general maintenance with formal training in effective supervision;

-Superior knowledge of the practices and procedures used in building maintenance operations with a working knowledge of building trades;

-Superior knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

-Able to obtain and maintain enhanced reliability status security clearance with the RCMP

-Must be in possession of and maintain a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;

-Able to maintain records and prepare and present reports both orally and in written format;

-Able to establish and maintain operating and capital budgets

-Able to establish and maintain effective work schedules and prepare progress reports;

-Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public and be neat and presentable in appearance;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, complete required forms and perform all facets of simple mathematics;

-Able to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;

-Able to lift and carry heavy objects;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials and other members of staff;

-Able to operate, maintain and make minor repairs to equipment;

-Good working knowledge of carpentry, electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades

-Sound knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in general maintenance and janitorial work and demonstrate care and skill in the use of the equipment and materials.

-Sound knowledge of RCMP safety protocols, procedures and operational requirements

Salary: $36.98 per hour (2023 rate)
