Duties: The incumbent in this class assists the Operations Department to achieve efficient, economical and reliable operation of the wastewater treatment facility while ensuring that all regulatory and compliance requirements are met. As a WWTP Laboratory Technician, the incumbent is expected to perform technical analyses for various parameters to ensure effective and reliable operation of the City’s Class IV wastewater treatment facility. The incumbent will be responsible for the collection of samples for testing and analysis in order to guide the calibration of the treatment process. Key responsibilities include ensuring that laboratory operations comply with established best practices, policies, procedures, regulatory requirements and guidelines.

Nature and Scope of Work:

- Collect wastewater samples at various points in the sanitary sewer collection system, during various stages of the treatment process and at plant effluent sampling locations. This includes the collection, transportation, preparation, and preservation of wastewater samples for routine and special analysis, including analysis by third party laboratories as required.
- Perform physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological testing and analyses of wastewater and industrial wastewater as required to ensure regulatory compliance, process regularity and process control is maintained.
- Observe and report potential and real time process problems and co-ordinate suitable response with the WWTP supervisor III and with WWTP operators to make changes, modifications and corrections as required.
- Receive, prepare and record data from all analyses in the prescribed time and form and maintain statistical records in accordance with recognized laboratory procedures.
- Prepare, calibrate, standardize and operate a variety of laboratory, sampling and operations equipment and instruments.
- Maintain, clean, and care for laboratory equipment, supplies and materials
- Perform minor servicing and maintenance work on laboratory and process control equipment.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and inventory of same.
- Use laboratory chemicals in a safe manner and perform all work in accordance with applicable safety regulations and guidelines and in accordance with current WCB regulations.
- Provide assistance and technical information to staff, contractors, consultants and outside agencies as required.
- Perform other related tasks including supervision of project contractors and employees as assigned.
- Perform other duties, including special projects, as assigned by the supervisor.

The incumbent will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday within the hours specified and, on occasion, work overtime as authorized. The incumbent may be required to travel in the performance of duties. The incumbent may be required to attend technical conferences and courses as required. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: - Must be a graduate of an Institute of Technology in a two (2) year Laboratory Technician biology, microbiology, chemistry or environmental science program and should have at least five (5) years progressive experience related to laboratory methods and operations;

- Must hold or be eligible to hold an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) designation;

- Must be in possession of a valid, class 5, B.C. Driver's Licence.
Skills: - Sound knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, and procedures.

- Sound knowledge of the principles and practices of qualitative and quantitative chemistry, mathematics, biology, microbiology and bacteriology.

- Sound knowledge of the principles of chemical and physical analysis.

- Experience with sampling procedures and field equipment.

- Ability to conduct chemical, biological and bacteriological examinations and analyses.

- Ability to conduct complex mathematical calculations.

- Ability to operate analytical laboratory instruments.

- Sound knowledge of computers and experience with a variety of computer software programs.

- Able to prepare clear, concise and technical reports.

- Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Salary: $36.36 to $42.78 (2018 rate)
