Title: Victim Services Caseworker (Part Time)
Department: Chilliwack RCMP
Duties: This is specialized work involving the provision of crisis intervention and follow-up support services to victims and witnesses of crime and other forms of trauma. Crisis intervention services consist primarily of responding to requests for emergency support from members of the Chilliwack RCMP and may include attending alone or with a colleague to any scene where requested by police. Victim Services Case Workers may provide emotional support, referral to community agencies and address emergent needs such a housing etc. Workers may find themselves working alongside other agencies or first responders including the fire department, paramedics or emergency social services.

Examples of work:
Attends the scene of police crisis call-outs such as crimes, serious accidents and domestic disputes and provides emotional support to distressed victims and witnesses; assists police with next-of-kin notifications in
cases of sudden death; provides information to victims on agencies available to provide assistance and liaises with agencies to obtain immediate services; as appropriate.

As requested by clients, provides on-going emotional support to victims of crime, trauma and family problems; makes referrals to appropriate agencies for services such as counseling, financial assistance, and legal
advice; in consultation with investigating officer updates clients on the progress of police investigations; provides assistance to victims in completing CVAP applications and victim impact statements.

Provides updates on the progress of matters before the courts; facilitates communication with Crown counsel and provides victims/witnesses with court support services including court orientation and
accompaniment.

Establishes and maintains client files documenting services provided; researches available community resources; prepares and adapts resource lists for the use of clients and staff; represents the program on
committees or at presentations as required.

Performs related work as required.
Education: Grad 12, preferably supplemented by courses in social services, victim services, trauma and crisis intervention or criminology, plus considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A Degree or Diploma in a related field (i.e. social work, criminology, psychology, sociology, criminal justice etc.) would be considered an asset.

Ability to obtain and maintain a RCMP security clearance.

Hold a valid BC driver’s license.

Experience working in a police agency or within the criminal justice systems would be considered an asset.

Familiarity with PRIME and/or JUSTIN would be considered an asset


Skills: Knowledge and understanding of the objectives and procedures of the RCMP Police Department, Chilliwack RCMP Victim Services and the services available to victims of crime and other traumas.

Working knowledge of court and police procedures and the Criminal Justice System as it relates to the work performed.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and terminology used in documenting client contacts and maintaining related files.

Demonstrated skills and experience in providing crisis intervention skills including the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Clear understanding of the boundaries, limitations and safety standards in the provision of crisis intervention services.

Demonstrated ability to work well with minimum supervision, as well as, part of a team.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. .

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.

Basic familiarity with computers and software.

Estimated time of arrival to Chilliwack RCMP Police Station must be a maximum of 30 minutes while on call.
Salary: $24.00 per hour (2022 Rate)
