Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation within the Parks Services of the Operations Department through reliable performance of all horticultural and parks related duties, observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices.

The incumbent in this class will be responsible for performing a variety of grounds maintenance and horticultural functions including maintaining irrigation systems and their related systems and facilities; performing repairs and regular maintenance to all parks facilities and equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for performing a wide range of horticultural duties, cultivating ground beds; planting flower beds, shrubs, trees, etc., pruning, weeding, applying herbicides and pesticides and performing other related horticultural duties. As directed, the incumbent will provide assistance in the parks utility operation, repairing, maintaining, constructing and developing park areas. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Supervisor III.

Education: -Must have successfully completed a Registered Apprentice Program in Practical Horticulture as sponsored by the Department of Labour and have a minimum of four years practical experience in horticulture;

-Must have a valid Pesticide Application Certificate as issued by the Provincial Ministry of Environment;

-Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence with appropriate classification of the equipment assigned.
Skills: -Must have sound knowledge in the principles, practices, procedures and methods used in horticulture endeavours;

-Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision;

-General knowledge of all parks maintenance, including irrigation and skilled in the use of tools and equipment used in parks maintenance;

-Must be in good health to work outdoors regardless of weather;

-General knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and methods used in parks maintenance;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;

-Able to operate a variety of parks equipment and make minor repairs to same;

-Able to lift and carry heavy objects;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms, logs and reports as required;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials, users and other members of staff.
Salary: $27.23-$32.04 per hour (2018)
