Duties: Under the general direction of the Manager of Leisure Development, the incumbent performs the planning, developing and or coordinating of recreational, social and cultural activities, programs and special events. The Coordinator is also responsible for providing liaison, consultant and resource services to community groups and associations and for supervising the work of subordinate staff, instructors, volunteers, developing and promoting community involvement in all services and programs, and ensuring that the City of Chilliwack Recreation and Culture objectives and requirements are met.

The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment, action and initiative within the limits of established policies and guidelines.
The incumbent will work with the staff of Recreation and Culture in establishing the leisure needs and interests in the community; initiate, complete and respond to community and user needs analyses as appropriate. The incumbent will work with community stakeholders in planning and promoting recreation programs for assigned area and provide liaising, consultative and resource services to other community groups and organizations in developing, coordinating, implementing, and promoting recreational and cultural programs in the area. The incumbent will prepare and submit digital program information reports, evaluations and statistical information; keeps Managers aware of non-routine, urgent or potential problems that may require intervention. The incumbent will provide input during budget preparation as it relates to community program and event coordination. The incumbent will communicate with the public by phone, email, in person and writing and work with Recreation and Culture staff in developing a comprehensive marketing program for activities and special events hosted or jointly delivered by the City of Chilliwack and other community stakeholders. The incumbent will assist Clerks in performing clerical duties as they pertain to Recreation and Cultural programs, special events, marketing and allocations and performs other duties as required

The incumbent in this class will work flexible working hours with some hours occurring in the evening, or on the weekend as the need requires. The incumbent will be required to travel in the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education plus 2 years of post secondary studies in Recreation or a related discipline, and related experience OR an equivalent combination or training and experience.

Must have a valid BC Driver’s Licence
Skills: Must have a satisfactory Criminal Records Check

Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, objectives and philosophy of community recreation programs.

Considerable knowledge of the cultural and recreational needs for all people of all ages and abilities

Considerable knowledge of sports, outdoor, art and cultural pursuits related to various program offerings

Knowledge of and ability to use computer programs used in recreation and leisure programs such as CLASS, Microsoft Office, , desktop publishing, Tempest etc

Knowledge of current office practices

Ability to exercise independence of judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy and to adapt to changing priorities

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public, internal and external agencies, and address varied audiences on topics related to programs and needs.

Ability to gain community participation in programs and events

Ability to prepare concise reports and correspondence

Good verbal and written communication skills

Must be in good physical condition

Salary: $34.30 per hour (2021 Rates)
