Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient, sustainable and economical operation in the development and implementation of environmental programs and projects in the areas of solid waste management, water resources, air quality, and biodiversity. Under the supervision of the manager, the Environmental Coordinator’s duties are performed in accordance with environmental standards and project objectives. The incumbent will be responsible for observing and complying with municipal policies and ensuring the safety and security of confidential material pertaining to the Department's operation.

The incumbent will be responsible for performing technical work related to sustainability and environmental management, which include waste management (recycling, composting and waste disposal), water resources management, air quality, climate change, contaminated sites, conservation and biodiversity.

Technical work includes research, investigations, inspections, data analysis, designs, specifications, drawings, cost estimates and reports. The incumbent will also make recommendations for environmental programs, assist in the preparation of budgets, attend committee and other meetings as and when required, write letters, carry out public education and outreach activities, prepare and manage contracts, prepare procurement documents and purchase orders, certify invoices and claims for payments, monitor expenditures in relation to budget control, keep records, files and drawings updated and maintain section filing systems.

The incumbent will liaise closely with other sections of the Department. The incumbent will provide assistance and technical information to staff, contractors, consultants, developers, and the general public. The incumbent will be required to perform other related tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Manager of Environmental Services.
Education: Must have, at a minimum, a Diploma in Environmental Studies, Environmental Protection, Environmental Technology or similar program and should have two (2) years’ experience in related municipal or environmental work -OR- an acceptable combination of education and experience.
Skills: Sound knowledge of environmental sustainability principles;

Knowledge of recycling, composting and landfilling practices, air quality issues, climate change, water resource management, conservation and biodiversity;

Able to research, analyse and interpret a variety of technical data and information;

Good knowledge of national, provincial and municipal laws, bylaws, codes and policies governing environmental matters;

Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with contractors, engineers, developers, elected officials, other members of staff and the general public;

Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in written format, with sound knowledge and ability to prepare and present technical and non-technical reports and all forms of general correspondence;

High level of computer literacy, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel;

Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
Salary: $28.49 to $33.52 (2015 rates)
