Duties: The incumbent in this class will be required to assist in the design, development and delivery of training programs, including both the recruit and probationary training programs; mentor and coach department staff to facilitate learning and enhance staff morale; ability to observe and evaluate others and provide constructive feedback to improve performance; assign and monitor training activities to career firefighters and paid-on call training officers; instruct in various aspects of emergency fire services and proctor examinations as required; maintain the training library, training aids and training facilities; research changes and make recommendations on equipment and methods of operation in the fire service and ensure present programs are current and relevant; maintain records for all training conducted, and maintain confidentiality of all records and staff performance. The incumbent will prepare requests for resources, given training and current resources, so that resources required to meet training goals are identified and documented.

The fire service instructor shall maintain professional competency through professional development, continuing education, networking, instructional development and delivery, and membership in professional organizations.

The incumbent may attend emergency incidents to provide assistance to the incident commander and evaluate operational safety and effectiveness, and attend and/or co-chair training officer meetings and other relevant meetings as required. The incumbent will also participate in the development of fire pre-incident plans; attend training seminars and workshops to stay current in all aspects of fire service operations and training and perform other related duties, as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Training Officer – Captain or Assistant Fire Chief - Operations and Training.
Education: Must have at least 6 years of career firefighting experience including considerable experience in instructing;
Must have completed Grade 12 education;
Must successfully complete Fire Service Evaluator Course;
Must have completed NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level 1;
Must be in possession of a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License and Air Brake endorsement;
Must be in possession of a current First Responder Level III License (including AED and spinal endorsement) and a current CPR Level C Certificate;
Must be physically fit and maintain the standard of fitness required by the Department.
Skills: Considerable knowledge of training and instruction techniques and methods used in adult education and staff training;
Extensive knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices used in firefighting, and the methods used in firefighting, rescue and emergency medical aid work;
Extensive knowledge of the operation of all fire apparatus and equipment;
Considerable knowledge of emergency scene management using the Incident Command System (ICS);
Considerable knowledge of Fire Department and City rules, policies and operational guidelines;
Extensive knowledge of building construction and fire service hydraulics;
Good knowledge of relevant computer software programs (eg. FDM Word, PowerPoint etc.);
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual or potential safety hazards;
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all Department staff, City Staff, Paid on-call members and the public;
Ability to complete various training reports and maintain accurate records;
Ability to mentor and coach staff members and firefighters;
Must have and maintain the standard level of physical fitness and mental wellness;
Able to plan, develop, and deliver training programs, courses, presentations, and demonstrations.
Salary: As per Collective Agreement
