Duties: This position assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Public Works Section of the Engineering & Operations Department through reliable performance in the operation of all equipment in the Equipment IV classification or below, observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices. You will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the equipment assigned; performing daily driver inspections and minor maintenance ensuring the equipment is operable and operated in accordance with recognized and acceptable practices. You will also be responsible for the safe operation of equipment assigned; reporting equipment faults/malfunctions to the Public Works Foreman for corrective action; during operation ensure the safety of the public, property and fellow workers; operating the equipment with special skill and attention to avoid obstacles and traffic. The incumbent will be responsible for acceptable operation of the equipment and the performance of a variety of public works projects and will perform other related tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Foreman III - Public Works.
Education: -Must have post secondary courses in the mechanical field, supplemented by formal training in Equipment Operators Courses - OR - have related training and experience;
-Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence with qualifications in classes appropriate for the operation of equipment including air ticket.
Skills: -Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of construction equipment;
-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;
-Sound knowledge of the principles, procedures and methods of equipment operation;
-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials and other members of staff;
-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms, logs and reports;
-Able to operate assigned equipment skilfully and in accordance with acceptable practices.
Salary: $22.65 to $26.65 per hour (2013 rates)
