Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient standard of housekeeping and janitorial services through reliable performance of janitorial, security and safety practices and a variety of minor maintenance functions, observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices.
The incumbent will be required to perform a variety of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in and around municipal facilities. The incumbent will be required to strip and wax floors; perform sweeping, dusting, vacuuming and mopping tasks; service washrooms; general cleaning including washing walls, doors, windows, and other flat surfaces; removing snow and ice from steps and walkways; replacing light bulbs and making minor repairs to equipment; setting up and dismantling equipment, fixtures and facilities for special functions, ensuring security of buildings to which the incumbent is assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for meeting and dealing with the public, being polite, courteous and diplomatic, providing assistance to the public/users in accordance with established policies. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision according to established routine, and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Facilities Supervisor
Education: Must have a minimum of grade 10 education and completed a Building Services Worker course at a recognized vocational institution - OR - the equivalent combination of training and experience;

Skills: Sound knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in building services work and demonstrate care and skill in the use of equipment and materials provided;

Able to be polite, courteous and diplomatic in dealing with the public and be neat and presentable in appearance;

Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms and perform all facets of simple mathematics;

Able to lift and carry heavy objects;

Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials, users and other members of staff;

Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards.

The incumbent in this class will be required to work any consecutive five (5) days within the hours of work as prescribed in published shift schedules and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The incumbent must wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of duties. Employees in this class will upon hiring have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Salary: $21.02/ hr – 24.73/hr (2014)
