Duties: As an Apprentice Mechanic the incumbant will work under the direction of a Journeymen Mechanic to learn the trade. The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation within the maintenance section of the Operations Department through reliable performance of mechanical functions as assigned; ensuring all municipal vehicles and equipment are maintained in an acceptable and operational condition, observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices.

The incumbent in this class is responsible, under the supervision of a Journeymen Mechanic, for maintenance and repairs of municipal vehicles and equipment as assigned; overhauling, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of automotive, mobile and stationary equipment; rebuilding and replacing transmissions; installing and repairing motors, front and rear assemblies and steering and braking systems. The incumbent may be required to perform welding and fabricating work. The incumbent will organize routine work and assist drivers/operators in regard to the maintenance of equipment and vehicles. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review and evaluation by the Mechanic Foreman and Fleet Operations Manager.
Education: Grade 12 graduation including English 12 or equivalent;

Must have successfully completed an entry level trades training course or equivalent training for Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic;

Must be registered as an apprentice mechanic with the ITA - Industry Training Authority of British Columbia or equivalent;
Skills: Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the automotive/heavy duty mechanic trade;
Knowledge of the practices, procedures, methods and principles used in vehicle/equipment maintenance;
Knowledge of National Safety Code regulations as apply to vehicles over 5000 kgs;
Knowledge of alternative fuels as related to a mixed fleet environment;
Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, maintain schedules, preventive maintenance programs and complete appropriate records, reports, etc.;
Able to operate or understand the principles of operation of all municipal equipment to perform road tests as necessary and must in possession of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence and must upgrade to Class 3 with Air Endorsement during the period of apprenticeship;
Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual or potential safety hazards;
Have working knowledge of computer applications as related to the duties of Apprentice Mechanic;
Understanding of the duties of Automotive Service Technician, Commercial Transport Mechanic and Heavy Duty off-road equipment;
Able to perform basic welding and fabricating work;
Able to demonstrate the proper procedures in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work place;
Able to establish and maintain effective work schedules and preventive maintenance programs;
Must posses communication skills and be able to interact effectively with other department staff and outside contractors;

The incumbent will be required to work any consecutive five (5) days within the calendar week and conform to the hours of work as prescribed in published shift schedules and on occasion, work overtime as authorized. The incumbent may be required to work outdoors regardless of weather. The incumbent will be required to wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of his duties and complete his duties in accordance with established and recognized safety practices. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Salary: 1st Year: 55%; 2nd Year: 65%; 3rd Year: 75%; 4th Year: 85% of Journeymen Mechanic rate
