Duties: GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation within the maintenance section of the Utility Operations Department through reliable performance of mechanical functions as assigned; ensuring all municipal vehicles and equipment are maintained in an acceptable and operational condition, observing and complying with municipal policies and safety practices.


NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

The incumbent in this class is responsible for all maintenance and repair requirements of all municipal vehicles and equipment as assigned;, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of automotive, mobile and stationary equipment including but not limited to: engines, transmissions, hydraulics, braking systems, emissions systems, axles and suspension. The incumbent is expected to have a basic set of hand tools and toolbox. The incumbent should have welding and fabricating experience. The incumbent will organize routine work and assist drivers/operators in regard to the maintenance of equipment and vehicles on which they work. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Mechanic Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The incumbent will be required to work any consecutive five (5) days within the calendar week and conform to the hours of work as prescribed in published shift schedules and on occasion, work overtime as authorized. The incumbent may be required to work outdoors regardless of weather. The incumbent will be required to wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of his duties and complete his duties in accordance with established and recognized safety practices. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Education: -Must have successfully completed a Red Seal Journeyperson mechanic certificate in one of the following fields; Truck and Transport, Heavy Duty or Automotive;

-Hold or able to obtain a valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate;

-Hold or able to obtain B.C. Pressure Fuel Certification;

-Hold or able to obtain Fire Apparatus Certifications;
Skills: -Superior knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the automotive/heavy duty mechanic trade;

-Superior knowledge of the practices, procedures, methods and principles used in vehicle/equipment maintenance;

-Sound knowledge of National Safety Code regulations as apply to vehicles over 5000 kgs;

-Sound knowledge of alternative fuels as related to a mixed fleet environment;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, maintain schedules, preventive maintenance programs and complete appropriate records, reports, etc.;

-Able to operate or understand the principles of operation of all municipal equipment to perform road tests as necessary and be in possession of a valid Class 3 B.C. Driver's Licence with air endorsement;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual or potential safety hazards;

-Have working knowledge of computer applications as related to the duties of Journeyperson Mechanic;

-Thorough understanding of the duties of Automotive Service Technician, Commercial Transport Mechanic, Heavy Duty off-road equipment, and Emergency Response Fire Fighting equipment;

-Able to perform welding and fabricating work;

-Able to demonstrate the proper procedures in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work place;

-Able to establish and maintain effective work schedules and preventive maintenance programs;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all departments and members of staff.
Salary: $43.51 per hour (2025 rate) plus a 1% premium for tool allowance
