Title: Prisoner Guard (Casual) 2 Positions
Department: Chilliwack RCMP - Public Safety and Social Development
Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation within the RCMP Community Police Office through reliable performance in guarding duties, observing and complying with Municipal and RCMP policies and procedures; and observing and complying with safety practices.

The incumbent in this class will be required to perform a variety of guard, security and administrative duties, varying in degree of responsibility and complexity; ensuring the safety and security of prisoners while detained in the RCMP cellblock; monitoring and documenting in the log book all movement of prisoners in and out of cells and physical checks of prisoners as per RCMP policy; complete cellblock incident reports on suicide attempts involving prisoners or any high risk incidents and forward direct to Watch Commander; keep the Watch Commander (in charge of cell block) up-to-date on daily operation; provide assistance to the RCMP in booking and releasing prisoners; operate computer programs to book in prisoners for members and also to update quarterly Keep of Prisoners report to determine Provincial or Municipal cost; facilitate prisoner phone calls to the lawyer or legal aid; prepare and serve meals to prisoners; on request, provide emergency cleaning, decontamination of cells when required; receive and secure prisoner effects; review prisoner sheets for accuracy and completeness by Member.

The incumbent will be required to immediately call EHS when required and advise Watch Commander on duty; hit panic button when backup is needed in cellblock; dispense and document medication to prisoners as directed by physician; ensure clean laundry, blankets and towels for prisoners; take photographs and fingerprints when required; keep visitor log to cellblock; ensure the placement of prisoners in cells as per RCMP policy; and provide testimony in Court when subpoenaed.

The incumbent will also fax documentation to Court on prisoners when requested; ensure recording system of cellblock is current and operational; brief with fellow guard before starting shift to go over prisoners being held for problems, health concerns, violence; and flag cellblock doors as per Detachment policy.

When prisoners not being held, provide assistance to Detachment to photograph new staff and Members; collect protected paperwork for weekly shredding; label operational files for Records; fingerprint for Pardon requests etc. at Front Counter for General Public; ensure cellblock fully stocked at all times with gloves, disinfectant, cuff cleaners, etc.; attend to enquiries from other Detachments and agencies for photographs of prisoners in data bank.

The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Supervisor.
Education: - Must have previous experience in guarding or security practices - OR - the equivalent combination of training and experience;

- Must have sound knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in the care and custody of prisoners;
Skills: - Able to understand written and verbal instructions in English and accurately complete required forms;

- Able to type a minimum of 30 net words per minute;

- Able to operate all equipment associated with guarding duties;

- Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials and other members of staff;

- Able to effectively control and care for prisoners when detained;

- Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;

- Able to qualify for and maintain the required security clearance for the position. Failure on the part of the employee to satisfy this requirement will necessitate the removal of the employee from the position.

- Must have up-to-date Hepatitis A, B inoculations.
