Duties: The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the Recreation and Culture Department through reliable performance in ice maintenance, general facility maintenance and janitorial tasks, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices.

The incumbent in this class will be responsible for performing a variety of ice maintenance, general maintenance and janitorial tasks varying in degree of complexity and responsibility and exercising a certain degree of independent judgement; operating a variety of machinery and equipment such as ice conditioning machines, ice edgers, power tools, maintaining, under instruction and supervision, the ice surface in proper condition; under general supervision of the Arenas Supervisor II or Arenas
Supervisor III assume responsibility for the Refrigeration Plant and related equipment; performing regular plant and facility checks and entering readings in logs/reports; performing a variety of tasks such as carpentry, and plumbing on facilities, equipment and grounds as directed; performing all janitorial tasks, dusting, sweeping, mopping, buffing, waxing, stripping and cleaning and servicing washrooms; washing windows and other flat surfaces; cleaning snow from walkways and door entrances; setting up and dismantling equipment, fixtures and facilities for special functions, ensuring security of buildings to which the incumbent is assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for meeting and dealing with the public; being polite, courteous and tactful, providing assistance to the public/users in accordance with established policies. The incumbent in this class will be a working supervisor responsible for performing the same duties as all Ice Person positions plus supervisory responsibilities of Schedule "C" Employees and on shift Ice Person. As assigned, the incumbent may have responsibilities for the scheduling and evaluation of Schedule "C" employees and will ensure cash reports are balanced. In the absence of the Arenas Supervisor, and as assigned, the incumbent will become the Acting Arenas Supervisor. The incumbent will perform other related tasks as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Arenas Supervisor.

The incumbent in this class will be required to work any consecutive five (5) days within a calendar week in accordance with published shift schedules. The incumbent must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather and in an arena. The incumbent must wear safety equipment as appropriate and observe recognized safety practices in the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Education: -Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education; successfully completed a Building Services Worker Course at a recognized vocational institute or the equivalent of training and experience.

-Must hold a valid Refrigeration Operator Certificate to Provincial Regulations and Legislation or valid Power Engineering Classification (Fourth Class or higher) that would qualify as approved alternative certification as a Refrigeration Operator;

Skills: -Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;

-Must have previous training in, and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in the preparation of artificial ice surfaces;

-Good knowledge of the principles and users of equipment and material used in janitorial work and able to demonstrate care and skill in the use of equipment and material provided;

-Able to operate a variety of equipment and make minor repairs to same;

-Able to lift and carry heavy objects;

-Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public and be neat and presentable in appearance;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Departmental officials, users and other members of staff;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms, logs and reports;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;

-Able to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates.
